Bernese are good dogs. They're goofy – really lovable clowns. If you know St. Bernards and Newfoundlands, you'll probably like Bernese and Great Swiss Mountain Dogs as well.
german shepherds:
loyal, they will follow and protect their owners and they are sooooo affecionate

well, your dad had big dogs and willtell you big dog big poop! i find labs are great companions… But do not get your dog for rebound reasons. Its like rebound dating, it never works out. Wait a while mourn some then make your decision.

I have a Siberian Husky and she is the best. She is high energy, but she never barks and we took her cross country and she stayed at the motels and we actually got to stay at one place that turned other people away because she is so well behaved.

I have a black lab/pit bull mix and he's the best dog I've ever had. Loves to play fetch, and can be protective when necessary. He has the best of both breeds. He's a very handsome dog as well. Has the shorter snout and shorter hair like a pit but the body of a black lab.
Oh, and he's extremely affectionate too. Loves to get attention!!

I have always had golden retrievers since i was a kid, and they've been great dogs.

go for German Shepard's!! I raise them and I love these animals. They are so smart and if you are anything like me, my animals are part of the family!! they are so SPOILED

The right dog for you by Daniel F. Tortora is one of the best books I have found for analyzing which dog to choose.
Best wishes.

I don't know much about the breeds you mentioned, but of course you should make sure you have the room, time, energy, and money to look after a big dog. They're also very expensive to get (as I'm sure you know, since your dad bred them) so there's that to consider. Consider checking out your local animal shelter first, they get purebreds more often than you'd think, and there's rescue groups for different breeds, too.
I think it's a good idea to get another dog. They're such wonderful companions, a new friend will help lift your spirits after the loss of your other dog. An awful loss, I'm very sorry to hear about it. I think a new dog would be good for you.

first and foremost, my condolences on the loss of your dog. fur absorbs tears so well and there is no reason i can think of for you not to get another dog as soon as you are up for it. those mountain breeds are wonderful, but remember that they have very short lifespans compared to other breeds (8-10 years). that's no reason not to love one, just a warning if you are the type of person who does not handle the loss of an animal all that well, you might chose a longer lived breed.
i have all rescue adopted dogs (3) in three sizes, two of which were older (7-8) years when adopted, and when my German Shepherd (now 10) leaves me, i'll probably be taking in another older Shepherd…somebody has to love the older ones and give them their last (and perhaps best) home…and I can handle the turnover better than most.
best of luck to you…and happy holidays!

I would get a labrador either yellow/brown they are so loyal and easy to train.

the mountain dogs are awesome dogs but alot of maitance they constantly want to be outside and need to be brushed daily.. if ur willing to put in the effort and be a good dog owner then the mountain breeds are the best because i have a st bernard and hes the best!

I m sorry about your dog
I would recommend a boxer they can be a bit of a handful because they always want to play but it's one of the things I love about my dog
I have had for 8 years, shes an old lady now but she will still get up to jump around and bark wenever I hover!
And of course she is a complete dote and will always be affectionate to you which is a big characteristic of the boxer
Good luck!

In large dogs they are several that are good dogs. But if you want a really great dog, I would go with an Akita. They are gorgeous dog, Two can take a full grown bear down. They were used as pack dogs back in WW ll. They had to climb mountains. Caring large packs on their backs. They are very strong, very loyal and very protective. In Japan, where they are from, they are said to babysit while the women are out doing their chores.
There is a story that a professor had an Akita. The dog followed him everyday to the train for him to go to work, one day the Professor had a heart attack, an died. The dog for ten years would return each and every day in the evening to met his master. When the dog finally died, they erected a statue in his honor. Now that is a Dog!!!!!!

well one you must be fully and emtionally ready for a new dog and two you have to think about the space you live in and if it permits medium to large dogs now if you can honestly say im emtionally ready for a new dog good thats one step to getting a dog and if you have plenty of space for the dog and if the place permits it then even better you select what ever dog you want i dont really have a preferred type and my dog is an outside dog so everything is well for me but i hope that helps a little if you got question feel free to ask me thanks

You could get a rescue greyhound. These dogs are very polite and gentle; they are physically fit but willing to laze around the house also. They are not good watch-dogs though.

I have a Berner and she is the BEST!! They love to work, be around their people, think they are (at 90 lbs) a lap dog and only shed 365 days a year:)
If you are in the Rhode Island area, they will be having a specialty show for them next year. LOTS of fun to go to!! You can meet all the top breeders there. http://www.bmdca.org/specialty/2008/index.php (click on 1st link that comes up)
ONE WORD of CAUTION…Be VERY careful who you get your pup from!! I can't stress it enough…Feel free to email me privately and I will help direct you to a good breeder in your area.
Good Luck in your decision.

iF U DONT CARE ABOUT all the bad things they say about rottweilers they might be a good coice. rotties are sweet and loving as long as you love them back. the only reason there is bad rottweilers out there is because their owners probably dont take good car of them.
I think a rottweiler would be a good dog to get.

I love giant breed dogs. I think they are absolutely the sweetest. I have a St. Bernard mix and she is the sweetest. She is kinda lazy and lays around all the time though.
I would say consider a rescue dog, there are so many out there in shelters.
Consider St. Rescue if going for a St. Bernard, they might have some in your area.
I think if you think you're ready, then go for it.

I have owned either directly or through my children and grandchildren all the popular breeds that you are going to be recommended. Each of them has it's strong points and characteristics that you must adapt to. (Note I didn't' say weak points). With my present dog the breeder wouldn't sell me one until I met their requirements. After 4 years I understand what they knew.
Today I am proudly owned by a Border Collie I have been properly trained into exercising him when he needs it. I take him on the neighbourhood tour to examine the workings of the neighbouring farms. Unfortunately due to illness I have been forced to retire from agility but he still loves me anyway.
If you think I have got this relationship wrong You will never appreciate Borders. You never own one they own you.
