The Theory and Practice of Breeding to Type and Its Application to the Breeding of Dogs, Farm Animals, Cage Birds and Other Small Pets

THE THEORY AND PRACTICE OF BREEDING TO TYPE – ITS APPLICATION TO THE BREEDING OF DOGS, FARM ANIMALS, CAGE BIRDS AND OTHER SMALL PETS. By C.J. Davies. A VINTAGE DOG BOOKS CLASSIC REPRINT. Originally published in 1928, this scarce early work on breeding to type is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS have republished it, using the original text and photographs, as part of their CLASSIC BREED BOOKS series. The author was a highly respected breeder of his day who states: – “Breeding to type is the business of every farmer and fancier. No matter whether the breeder is dealing with show or merely useful stock, he is always consciously or unconsciously selecting and breeding for certain definite qualities which please his eye or promise to increase the value of the stock in which he is interested.” The book’s one hundred and eight pages consist of ten comprehensive chapters including six full page photos. Chapters deal with: – Breeding to Type. – False Doctrines. – Pedigree. – Modern Heredity. – Mendelism. – Establishing a Strain. – Inbreeding. – Methods of Mating. – Colour. – Heredity and Disease. – Early Maturity. – Sterility. Etc. Also included are a Breeders Table and a Table of Breeding Data. Breeding to type comes within the province of a great number of animal and bird fanciers, and is a subject upon which so many erroneous ideas are held. The author successfully attempts within these pages to place before breeders of every class of animal the rules which govern the production of standard types. Many of the earliest dog books, particularly those dating back to the 1900’s and before, are now extremely scarce, and increasingly expensive. VINTAGE DOG BOOKSare republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
Caring For Chihuahua Dogs
Caring For Chihuahua Dogs
You need to understand the conditions to keep your Chihuahua in order to remains healthy and active. Knowing this conditions before hands will ensure there are no surprises. You will enjoy your Chihuahua the more if you know how to care for it
Chihuahua Should Be House Trained
The Chihuahua should be kept in a warm environment, because they can easily catch cold, even while you feel hot. Chihuahua should be housetrained to use a liter box or paper for its need, this will ensure the dog is not exposed to winter temperatures.
Feeding
A Chihuahua is good at self-regulating its food intake and overweight Chihuahuas usually have somebody giving them too many rich treats. A Chihuahua will burn up energy quickly and even though it may only need half a cup of food everyday, tiny sized kibble should be made available to the dog at all times to prevent the Chihuahua from getting low blood sugar. Your dog should not have an all meat diet and should have vegetables available as a part of its diet.
Some Chihuahuas may be prone to kidney stones so be sure that your Chihuahua drinks lots of water. If you do not make your own dog food, make sure that when you buy dog food that it does not have by-products because some of the by-products used by unethical dog food manufacturers can include feathers, hooves, road kill, euthanized pets and other things that you do not want to feed your Chihuahua.
Exercising
Though it is tempting to carry your Chihuahua everywhere, your little dog does need exercise. So, let the Chihuahua walk too. Carrying a Chihuahua too much can make it fearful and aggressive because the dog expects you to be protecting them from anything and everything and may get aggressive if faced with something or somebody new when they are alone.
You can put your Chihuahua on a harness when you want to walk it though you should make sure the Chihuahua is warm at all times. It is not suitable to walk a Chihuahua in the winter because it is too cold. When it is cool out, put a sweater or coat on your Chihuahua. Chihuahuas should not be allowed to jump up to and from tall heights. The reason is that the dog’s patella can be seriously injured from such a jump.
Grooming
The longhaired Chihuahua should be brushed daily and the smooth coat Chihuahua can be simply smoothed with a cloth and brushed sometimes. You can give your Chihuahua a monthly bath but be careful not to get its ears wet.
Basic Manners
The Chihuahua is a very loving breed that can become very attached to only a few people. It also may not like small children because it senses the danger of letting the child play with it. As you learn to care for Chihuahua dogs, you will find this dog is happy to stay with its owner all day.
Caring for Chihuahua dogs is not much different than it is for other breeds. But because of their small size, special considerations and care should be employed, you will become more familiar with when caring for Chihuahua dogs.

What are some small mixed dog breeds?
My mom wants to get a dog, a small one though. We hear that its much easier to train mixed bred dogs and they are cheaper too. Do you know of any good breeds?
I have a two year old chi-russel (chihuahua jack russell). She is 10 pounds and extremely smart, loveable and friendly. She does tricks. She has most of the jack russell traits. A little on the hyper side, but we take her for walks and let her play outside. Actually she hunts for lizards. We call her the Lizard Hunter. She does well with children. She is white with a brown spot on her back and ears. She has a brown circle around one eye. Anyway, I would suggest a chi-russell =0)
Small Dog Breeds like Chihuahua, Toy Poodle, Toy Fox Terrier, Papillon…… Are Lovely Creature .
Small Dog Breeds are adorable creature and brings joy and amazing experience to the owners.
People, who live in apartments and want to keep dogs, would do well to go through a list of small dog breeds. They need much less space and exercise, and are easier around the house. Unfortunately, many on a list of small dog breeds are yappy, noisy little creatures. It is almost as if they want to compensate for their sizes by barking continuously!
Choosing a puppy from a list of small dog breeds can be simplified by making a choice between a short haired breed, and a long haired one. Shorthaired dogs are easier to groom, and preferred by those who do not have much time for all this. A breed that falls in both categories is the Chihuahua, as you can get long haired and short haired varieties. They are really small and along with the English Toy Spaniel, Papillon, Toy Fox Terrier, and Toy Poodle, are part of the toy group on any list of small dog breeds.
Some others on the list of small dog breeds are popularly known as lap dogs. They enjoy sitting on owners laps, and being petted or groomed all the time. This does not mean that larger dogs do not sit on laps! Pomeranians, Pekingese, Maltese, Lhasa Apsos, Miniature Pinschers, also known as Minpins, are some popular lap dogs. The Papillon, Lhasa Apso, Silky Terrier and Pekingese, are some of the better known long haired dogs.
Characteristics of Some Dogs on the List of Small Dog Breeds
Small dogs are often colorful characters, but surprisingly not so patient with small children. While some are essentially lap dogs others prefer to romp around outside. It can be difficult to choose a particular breed from the list of small dog breeds to bring home as pets, as most of them are very cute.
The King Charles Spaniel is an extremely friendly dog that gets along exceptionally well with people and other animals. Chihuahuas seem to forget they are tiny, and have the temperament of large dogs. The Papillon or Continental Toy Spaniel is amongst the gentlest and most affectionate of dogs. It is fond of outdoor exercise and is quite a tough dog.
Pekingese can rule the house and is the perfect lapdog. Pomeranians can be highly intelligent and are good companions. Some people think they are more cat-like by temperament. Pugs and Fox Terriers are both ideal to have with children around. They enjoy company and are very energetic and playful. At the end of their play they love to curl up in the lap!

Does anyone know where to shop for small dog breeds at reasonable prices?
I would like to own a small puppy or toy breed –no chihauhaus, please.
Look up and research what a "toy breed" is. It is simply a premature puppy that can have a lifetime of serious health issues. They are also extremely fragile. The best place to buy any dog is a breeder. It is half of what you would pay at a pet store. The VERY BEST place, is an animal rescue center.

What are some good small dog breeds to have in a house with small kids?
I have a 2 year old, and although I don't plan on getting a dog right now, we may in the future. She would be older but we will have more kids so there's possibility of having smaller toddlers/babies in the house. We teach our kids to behave and be gentle around animals but I'd like to know what kind of small dog would be good in a family household?
I have 2 recommendations for you: the Rat Terrier and the West Highland White Terrier. Both dogs come in small sizes (I don't mean toy). Both dogs are tough (ie: not easily hurt like an Italian Greyhound or Chihuahua). Both breeds love to play and are good with kids. Neither breed is skittish around young children. Both breeds are remarkably good about the accidental rough play they may get from young children.
A normal-sized Westie is about the same size as a standard Rat Terrier.
1. Rat Terriers: lots of breed books and websites don't mention them because they weren't recognized as a breed by AKC until 2007. Short-haired (therefore less to shed), very smart and athletic but unlike many other terriers, they have an "off" switch. Great at tricks. All dogs love to be around people but especially ratties. A very good indoor dog as long as they get exercise during the day. Comes in 4 sizes (toy, miniature, standard and decker–which is bigger than you want). All muscle and tendon so they look athletic and are tough little dogs. Not great for cold weather climates because of their short-hair.
2. Westies: double-coat and longer hair than a rattie (some people like that, others don't). In a hot-weather climate you'd probably want to cut some of that coat off. This breed is also a bit of a "digger" so you'll need to make sure your backyard has some provisions to prevent a westie from digging under the fence or uprooting all your flowers.

What dog breeds are small enough to fit into bags?
I often see women with very small dogs which they carry around in bags which resemble purses or tote bags. What are the breeds of dogs which are small enough to do this with? If someone could provide a list of a few, it would be appreciated.
Okay, before someone tries to report me for animal abuse…I do not want to put the dog in a bag. I am just trying to specify that I want an extremely small dog. When I peope before they say things like beagles or dachsunds, which can way up to 25 pounds. All I want is a tiny dog, and this is my way of qualifying how tiny. I am not planning on carrying it in a bag myself.
you're sick, someone should put you in a bag!! get a life!!
