Can mixed breed dogs be smarter than pure breeds?
I've heard today that mixed dogs can be smarter than pure breed dogs (at least in some limits). I thought that this could be some benefit of their genetics but I am not sure. Do you have any answer to this?
Logically, "mixed breed" dogs are not smarter, nor dumber than "purebred dogs".
Over the decades of trialing dogs in various dog competitions and sports, and being an agility trainer for 12 years, I have seen brilliant purebred dogs and brilliant mixed breed dogs. I have seen some obnoxious, uncontrollable, dense mixed breeds (most recent 2 so-called labradoodles) as well as some purebreds.
But, you need to really define "smart". I rather assume most people who use this term are actually referring to a dog's "trainability".
I have known some REALLY intelligent dogs that are pretty impossible to train for the average person…..and some dogs that catch on to training really quick that are rather 15 watt bulbs.
As far as people talking about mixed breeds being "better" than purebreds because of expanding the gene pool, anad they get the "best" from both breeds…..that is a load of crock. They can just as well get the "worst" from both breeds. As far as not having the health problems of the purebred…well, do you know any mixed breed people who have their dog's hips x-rayed, their eyes certified, etc etc???? If you breed a mix which carries genes for certain health problems to a another of the same….the health problem will arise.
Is Mixed Dog Breeds The Perfect Choice For You?
Is Mixed Dog Breeds The Perfect Choice For You?
Mixed dog breeds are dogs that have more than one dog breed type in its ancestry. There are diverse behavioural trait requests by dog owners nowadays, which gives room for breeding dogs which have several dogs types in their genetic make-up, So you can find mixed dog breeds of diverse backgrounds. In this write-up we will be detailing the types of Mixed Dog Breeds which are commonly recognized.
Please note that The Mixed Breed Is Not AKC Material, that means to say mixed dog breeds do not have registration papers and are not eligible for them either.
Although some of these mixed dogs can look closely like a purebred dog but its mixed ancestry will prevent the dog from getting its registration papers. A mixed breed is not eligible to compete in the American Kennel Club competitions although it can compete in obedience competitions. Just to make the difference clear, a crossbreed dog is a dog with full breed parents of different breeds.
Hard To Figure Out Breed Type
Mixed dog breeds are commonly known as Mutts. If a dog has a mixed ancestry, it can be difficult to figure out what type of breeds that it represents. Unless you know for sure because you know the dog’s parents, you may not ever know what breeds are in your dog’s family history.
Mixed dog breeds are not for people who want to know exactly what the dogs will look like as they mature and they are also not suitable for someone who wants their dog to perform certain tasks such as hunting and herding because it is unknown how much of the desired traits it will exhibit unlike the behavior expectations that can be had with a pure breed dog. A mixed dog will have an even chance of displaying the traits, good and bad, of any of the breeds in its family history.
Mixed dogs are less expensive that purebred dogs. Mixed dog breeds produce a very nice dog that will be just as fine and loyal of a companion as you could desire from any purebred dog. You can train mixed dog breeds with as much success as you can have with purebred dogs.
Rescue A Dog
There are many mixed dog breeds in animal shelters so you will be able to rescue a dog from a shortened life and gain a wonderful canine companion for much less money than you would have spent on a purebred dog. These rescued dogs seem to know when they have been saved and they are very grateful and loving pets. Animal shelters are interested in getting the dogs a good home and will try to match the dog with a compatible owner.
A mixed breed dog is a fine dog for most homes and families. Mixed dog breeds may also be hardier health wise and will not be as susceptible to the illnesses that can strike purebred dogs. Your mixed breed dog can add joy and love to your life so do not overlook a dog’s value just because it is a mixed breed.

Has anyone done the Canine Heritage Breed test to find out what breeds their mixed breed dog is made of?
If so, what do you think? Were you surprised? Would you do it again?
I love my mutt too! I would never change him. Sometimes I just look at him and I am so curious what his Momma Dog looked like and what his Daddy Dog looked like. But before I spend any money on the test, I wondered if others had any experience with it.

I haven't used the canine Heritage test but I have heard of it. Currently they can't idenitify all breeds. You might wish to check their website to see a list of the 38 breeds they can currently identify. If your pet contains a breed not listed they will not be able to identify that part of the DNA and may list a breed in the gentic that occured prior. They are supposed to be adding new breeds to their current base within a few months. There is also another DNA agencey called Zoogen that can determine what's in your doggies mix. Go to their website to see what breeds their DNA databse consits off. Also ask your vet if the perform the MARS test. It's suposed to be available sometime midsummer. Good luck. I think it's great you want to know your dogs history. It helps you better care for your pet if you know what your dogs breeds are and what they are genetically at risk for.
Uh, do you guys think that mixed dog breeds are cute???
