Labrador Retreivers – Everyone’s Favorite

Dog Breeds and Training blog

Labrador retreivers make the most wonderful pets. They epitomize the phrase “Man’s Best Friend.” They are loyal, reliable, faithful, and easy to handle. Labrador retreivers were originally from Newfoundland in Canada, where they were used by fishermen to jump overboard and haul in the fishing lines. The icy waters made them into strong swimmers. Some of them were taken to England, where their retrieving skills were honed by hunting expeditions. There is now an English breed of Labrador which is stockier than the lanky American breed. They were once known as St. John’s dogs.

Labrador retreivers are longer than they are higher, with muscular bodies and thick necks.  They have broad heads, thick noses, and wide muzzles. Their eyes are irresistible, chestnut or hazel, with an intelligent expression. The medium-sized ears are pendant. Labs have strong hairy tails, and thick, smooth short haired double coats that are easy to maintain. They are strong swimmers, and excellent at retrieving. They are almost always in solid colors, and can be black, yellow, or chocolate. There is also a rare silver or gray breed, which may be a mutant. It is classified by the American Kennel Club as a chocolate line.

Why Choose Labrador retreivers as House Pets?

Labrador retreivers are highly intelligent, easy to train, and extremely loyal. They are very friendly and sociable, while being extremely patient and gentle with children. They make ideal companions for growing children, as they are energetic, high spirited, and willing to go along with anything.  A litter of sturdy little Labs with their doleful expressions is hard to resist! As puppies, they are easy to house break and amiable though frisky. They are good watch dogs, and not usually guard dogs, but some have been trained for this purpose. They are comfortable around other dogs too. They need a fair amount of exercise but if they are kept in an apartment, they adjust to it. They need to get their outdoor exercise though, to stay fit.

Labrador retreivers are good sports and love being in the water. Labrador retreivers are multi talented working dogs. They are police dogs, and often trained in sniffing out bombs by special squads. They are also part of narcotics detection teams. Labrador retreivers are excellent as guide dogs for the blind, and service dogs for the disabled. Their patient easy going nature is perfect for these jobs. They perform exceedingly well in obedience competitions, and win many plaudits for their owners.

Dog Breeds and Training blog

Dogz Fashion for Nintendo Game Boy DS

Ubisoft’s bountiful litter of Petz games continues with Dogz Fashion, which has handheld owners dressing Dachshunds and other puppy breeds in more than 400 articles of clothing and accessories. As in previous Petz games, players are encouraged to care for their precocious pet by feeding, teaching, and playing with them. Hats, shirts, shoes, pants, and other items can be mixed and matched for a picture-perfect ensemble. Prized pooches can then strut their stuff in a fashion show while players snap photos. Featured breeds include Toy Poodles, Boston Terriers, Corgis, Chihuahuas, Labrador Retrievers, and more. A total of 16 dog-oriented mini-games are available for single or multiplayer fun, including soccer, jumping rope, and catch. After a long day of modeling and running around, puppies can retire to a custom room filled with a choice of furniture, wallpaper, and toys. ~ Scott Alan Marriott, All Game Guide Universal Nintendo DS

What smaller alternative is there to the labrador retriever breed?

Dog Breeds and Training blog

I want the personality of labrador retrievers but don't want such a big dog. I'm looking for a dog weighing about 30 to 40 pounds. Any suggestions? Obedience is very important.

I suggest a Labrador mix. Labs are one of the most common dogs in shelters, and there are many Lab mixes that look just like Labs only smaller.
Try these places. :0)

What is a blockhead labrador retriever?

I've heard the term blockhead labrador retriever? What is it? Why do I care? What other kinds of heads do labradors have?

Labs, like other breeds, come in different "types". The term blockhead refers to a lab with a heavier head, as opposed to the labs with much more refined looking heads. And there's no reason to care unless your dog is a show dog – it makes no difference to the dog!

How do I prevent my male labrador from marking (urinating) furnitures and other spots in our house?

My male labrador (6 yrs old) can't help mark some of our furnitures, my son's study table and most of all, our sofa in the living room. Even if we repeatedly tell him that it is wrong, that he's a bad dog, even banning him from entering our house for a week – no effect. He still marks his favorite spots. Would appreciate suggestions – thanks!

If this dog is doing this at age 6 then he obviously has never been given any training. A dog this size should also spend most of his time outdoors, except when temperatures are extreme. Dr. Stanley Coren is a terrific animal psychologist who knows all about canine behavior and effective training methods. If you read some of his books or view his videos you will become the kind of owner your pet will be proud to own.

How do we take care of labrador puppies in such a hot climate in chennai and what food to keep them healthy?

Chennai is very burning hot these days and i have two labrador puppies with me. What should i do to keep them away from this heat and what food should t give to keep them healthy and strong? I also want to take them to my home town by train from chennai to guwahati. What are the safety measures needed to take while travelling by train.

i have heard of cool packs for dogs. google it see if you can find any near you.when traveling make sure they have water. when we travel by car i freeze a few bottles of water and as it melts they drink it from the bottle, nothing beats freash ice water when your hot. I don't know how far the trip is (lenght of time) so I can't give any tips there. sry.as for food find something where meat is the first few indegrents. no corn and as little filler as you can afford.
